One of the things I've noticed about my daughter, is that she's developed the "supermom" syndrome. I don't know if this is just a part of her personality, and/or is a result of her firstborn child being born with BBS. Ian is now 14 years old, and while he requires a lot less care on a daily basis because he can manage so much of his daily needs for himself, she still has a lot to do. She works as a rep for a tech company, manages the household, makes his numerous routine and emergent medical issue appointments, takes him to all of his medical appointments (including weekly allergy shots) makes sure all his prescriptions are refilled, and serves on the board for Ian's brother's baseball league, taking him to his games, practices, and lots more.
Does that sound like your relative caregiver, too? I wonder how many moms of BBS kids are "supermoms/superdads"? In the future I want to add a survey to this blog that will measure the work these caregivers actually do, and report the results.
The primary issue here is what can we as grandparents/family members/friends of the primary caregiver do to help?
It'd be great to hear your thoughts and ideas on this issue.
Thanks,
